Life seems to be stuck on the fast forward button, everything needs to happen instantly. A thought crosses our minds and we act immediately. No-one seems to stop to take a moment to actually consider how these actions will affect someone else and often we are left with regret and can’t understand why.
So if you are thinking of ending your relationship because it is not working out how you planned it or imagined it, it is a decision that should not be taken lightly and definitely not made instantly as you are about to rip your partner’s world from underneath them and break their heart at the same time.
Before you act on your decision, you need to make absolutely sure that a breakup is what you want and need. Make sure it’s not just because you are upset, angry or hurt about something that happened which is temporary and can be resolved.
To do this you need to take a few steps back and really explore what you are thinking and feeling about your relationship. It is very helpful to write your thoughts down in a question and answer format. Remember no-one is going to see this, only you, so be completely honest with yourself.
Here are some important questions to help you get started with your process:
- What are the reasons for your decision to break up?
- Will you ruin your partner’s life?
- How will they react to your decision?
- Are you still in love with your partner and why?
- Have you given your relationship, the very best?
- Is there anything you can do to resolve your issues?
· Communicating more effectively with your partner
· Working through your issues by forgiving yourself or your partner, would it change things
· Would Counseling with a professional help
- What will life be like after your breakup?
- Will you be able to stay friends somehow?
- Will you regret your decision sometime down the line?
So please do not act immediately as every relationship no matter how long or short with only one exception being an abusive relationship of course, really deserves for you to make an effort and take the time to work through and sort out your feelings towards your relationship. Just maybe, during your process, you will change your mind and decide to work things out with your partner and end up with a happier and stronger relationship.
